2020 Winter Skincare Guide For All Skin Types

Portrait Headshot

Winter is finally here and welcomes 2020! A lot of people left behind toxic relationships, dead-end jobs, and negative attitudes in 2019. However, there are some things almost everybody has to face in life and that's skincare issues such as chapped skin on face.

I don't know about you but I need all the moisturizers, the serums, and antioxidants to stay afloat in my regimen or else serious winter skincare issues will arise.

WINTER SKIN ISSUES

Winter skin issues can have a negative effect during this frigid climate.

Some of the issues that arise are:

  1. Dehydrated skin

  2. Oily Skin

  3. Dry Skin

DEHYDRATED SKIN

Dehydrated skin is when you're lacking water. Not only do the effects of being dehydrated show up on your face but internally as well. Lack of hydration can cause negative effects such as:

  • dryness

  • headaches/migraines

  • the inability to hold products into the skin

The negative effects that will appear on your face would be:

  • blemishes/acne

  • paleness

  • a "gray" appearance

  • fine lines (that appear to look like wrinkles)

SOLUTION

Drink water. I know, I know, everyone says "DRinK WaTEr" but it's true. Water is essential and more you get accustomed to drinking water, your body will start to crave it. Before you drink coffee in the morning, drink 32 oz. water with a lemon wedge to wake your system and get the day started. The lemon will help retain your hydration levels throughout the day.

OILY SKIN

Oily skin happens when your skin is overcompensating on the hydration you're lacking. When your skin is producing too much oil it can lead to a few problems.

The negative effects that will appear on your face would be:

  • clogged pores

  • blemishes

  • acne

  • congestion

SOLUTION

Having the right routine that is suitable for your skin type can help with managing and diminishing oily skin. A routine for oily skin is listed further down below.

DRY SKIN

Dry skin can be such a burden during the winter season. I too suffer from dryer skin. Dry skin can be very time-consuming when it comes to getting the right products.

The negative effects that will appear on your face would be:

  • itching

  • flaking

  • skin rash

  • blemishes

SOLUTION

Using products including home remedies for dry skin that are moisturizing and diminish dryness:

MORNING & EVENING SKINCARE ROUTINE STEPS

Skincare Products

Morning Routine

  1. Toner (if necessary)

  2. Vitamin C

  3. Moisturizer

  4. SPF (if applicable)

Evening Routine

  1. Pre-cleanse (if necessary)

  2. Cleanse

  3. Toner (optional)

  4. Serum

  5. Mask (1/2x a week)

  6. Moisturizer

  7. Eye Cream (optional)

"Do I really need all these products?"

Some people don't feel the need to cleanse their faces and do the necessary steps but if you make it a habit to do it every night, you'll see improvements in your skin in no time. It is also a form of self-care and that alone time that I feel everyone needs.

PRE-CLEANSE

Precleaning is a great first step to remove oil and makeup (if necessary) off of your face BEFORE applying cleanser. The pre-cleanse helps break the makeup down before applying a cleanser of your choice.

CLEANSER

Cleanser, in my opinion, is the most important step in your skincare regimen. Cleanser breaks down the oil, the excess sebum, sweat, environmental factors, and whatever else you can think of to create a canvas for smooth skin and for other products to help penetrate better.

TONER

Toner is not necessary but can play a vital step in your skincare regimen depending on your skin type and the products you're using afterward. Toner is not necessary because nowadays, other products that you're using on your skin are formulated with a balancing ph. However, if your skin is not balanced, it can cause dry skin, sensitivity, irritation, and blemishes.

SERUM

Serum is also an important step especially after toner because serums help heal the skin. Finding the right serum for your skin type and skin issues is very important especially if you're trying to achieve optimal skin for your liking. Serums can help with diminishing fine lines and wrinkles, providing moisture, fading dark spots, and clearing the skin from blemishes or other issues.

MASK

A good face mask can really improve your skin. Hydrating sheet masks are rich in vitamins and nutrients that help the skin heal, especially during the winter season.

MOISTURIZER

Moisturizer is a very important step because it helps lock in everything. Without moisturizer locking all those nutrients in, all that effort you put in to achieve a skin care regimen would work against you. It is important to find a moisturizer that works for your skin type and that won't clog your pores.

EYE CREAM

Finding an eye cream that is effective can be a daunting task but once you find one, you'll be hooked! When looking for an eye cream, try to find something with hyaluronic acid or caffeine. Hyaluronic acid improves skin texture and smoothness. If you're against eye cream, you can always use a moisturizer especially the kind with ceramides and hyaluronic acid.

Below is a recommended list of winter skin care products to use during the evening. It is not a must-do list. If you have products that suit your needs during the winter season, still use it.
